Kelso Library Readers Group Meeting 27th May 2008
Kelso Library Readers Group
The readers' group meeting held on Tuesday, 29th May, was attended by nine members.
As usual it was a very interesting meeting, with plenty of books to give our opinions on plus various subjects coming up for discussion. First of all we discussed the books we had reread from times gone by...such as "I Claudius", "The Great Gatsby" and "The Flight of the Heron". Quite a mixed bag but all had proved interesting and a worthwhile reread. One of our members never rereads a book...maybe she doesn't realise what she is missing, or perhaps she is wise?? Then we got onto the nitty gritty of what we had been reading recently. Leonard Woolf's autobiography, "South of the River" by Blake Morrison and "Titus Alone”, another good read. Linda Grant's "The Clothes on their backs" and Catherine O’Flynn's "What was lost", all of them appeared to please their readers.
However our Readers group book this month, Irvine Welsh's “The Bedroom secrets of the Master Chefs”, about the bedroom habits of master chefs didn't do very well. We wondered if he was continuing the theme of "Trainspotting" with his liking for bad language. Other books mentioned were "Disclosure" about sexual harassment in the workplace by Michael Crichton..."Flodden Field" by Elizabeth McNeill and Joanne Harris' new novel, “Lollipop shoes”. We also discussed the lack of reading, or wanting to read, in children. Has this an effect on their behaviour nowadays?...and of course, if their parents don't read the children are not encouraged. PS. It has just occurred to me that in the "soaps" I cannot recall there ever being any books or shelves of books in the homes of the characters depicted. That’s all for this month. Next month, 24th June, we have decided it would be nice to go out for lunch before the meeting. Possibly to Oscars. If you are interested and didn't put your name down at this month's meeting, please do so, in the library. Good reading IHE
