Notes from the chair. It was with the greatest sadness that I heard that our secretary, Janice Still, died on 21st February, after being taken back into Borders General Hospital the day before. Many will know that Janice had been increasingly unwell in the latter part of last year, but we were all extremely concerned when in January it was diagnosed that she had cancer. The antiques group is continuing to meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month, with a growing number of people interested in joining. The January session was on jewellery with everyone bringing along some favourite pieces and in February Ralph and Gilliam Stone gave another fascinating talk on antiquarian books, illustrated with some amazing books from their own collection. Culture Vultures In January thirty three members visited the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. The group was split into two as we had two guides. The 2012 programme began with a presentation entitled 'The remarkable life and legacy of Professor Archie Cochrane'. This traced the remarkable life of Archie Cochrane from his birth in Galashiels in 1909 to his death in 1988. Poetry Group There are currently approximately 12 members attending the poetry reading sessions. 4 sessions have been held this year so far. This group is very informal in that there are no leaders; individual members offer and organise a route and all are welcome to participate. NEW GROUP - AMBLERS

U3Amblers Amblers. The new group for easy walks got off to a cracking start with 25 participant bipeds and one dog. Numbers since have been more manageable and a variety of walks of up to about 3 miles appear to have been greatly enjoyed. Book Exchange and Freecycle Our book exchange seems popular with U3A members so will continue. Anyone can take a book or two from the selection available at each monthly meeting.
