Sir Henry James Sumner Maine
Sir Henry James Sumner Maine was a leading jurist and developer of the legal system. Born in 1822, he pioneered the study of comparative law and anthropological jurisprudence. He was Professor of Civil Law at Cambridge from 1847 - 1854. He was a major influence in the codification of the law in India. In 1869 he became the first Professor of Comparative Jurisprudence at Oxford, and in 1887 became Professor of International Law at Oxford. He was the author of a series of published lectures and other books. Knighted in 1871, he died in Cannes in 1888.
