Professor Robert Allan Smith

Born in Kelso in May 1909, Professor Smith was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge and St Andrews. He was an expert in the field of Wave Theory. After various posts both in Britain and the USA he was appointed Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in 1968, a post which he held until 1974. He was President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1977-1979. He died in 1980.
