William Murdock was responsible for the development of the use of coal gas as a means of lighting. Although not a Kelso man, his invention was first tried out by lighting a house in Bridge Street. The house which belonged to a coppersmith, is now the premises occupied by Swans shoe shop. A gifted engineer, Murdock, also, apparently, once went for interview wearing a wooden bowler hat which he had turned on the lathe in his workshop!
